Our Previous 'Where-Is-It' Photo...

Our previous location was Luce and Gaines Sts., between Maple Ave. and Robinson St.. The location was rated Too Easy by 3 people, Easy by 5, Average by 2, and Hard by 1.

The photo can be seen -[ here ]-

We received 9 entries... all with the correct location, and 5 identifying 1972 occupant(s), and 1 getting close. The correct entries (with the # of streets named) were from: Mike Smith - South FL (5) Don Claypool (5) Charlie (5)
BruceS (4) Hy (5) V Gates - Des Moines WA (4) Paul Loll (4) Mike Swasta (5) Bob Pierce - Coastal NC (4) Don Sherman (5) . Highlighted entries correctly identified one or more of our 1972 occupant(s), which were Johnson's Cur-Rate, Job & Drake Cash Food, and Herb's Garage on Maple Ave., and the Luce St. Market on Luce St.. We received the following comments:

[ Don Claypool ] This is the main drag to get to Dunn Field for baseball games. We got furniture from Parsons.

[ BruceS ] Also before the flood there was an Odd Fellows Lodge on Luce and behind Drake's was a small row of businesses, Barber Shop, Toy Store, Sporting Goods store. The flood wiped most of the business out of the black. Grew up in the neighborhood with Dunn feild in my backyard.

[ Hy ] This part of Elmira's southside was my childhood stomping ground. Used to ride my bike to Red Drake's market and get freshly ground meat for burgers and spaghetti sauce. Next door was a variety store of sorts that also had a soda fountain. Vanilla phosphates and cherry cokes were the popular beverages.

[ Paul Loll ] I grew up at 314 luce street great memories from that area

[ Mike Swasta ] Later in the 70s, Johnsons Variety and Drakes Food store became Parsons Furniture and Appliance Store; it is now a tanning parlor. A Stop and Go Convenience Store replaced Herbs Garage; it is now Dominos Pizza. Don?t really remember whether Poyneers Restaurant or the Odd Fellows Lodge became Dunners Pub.

Also in the neighborhood ? Jim Pierces barber shop at Luce St and Maple Ave; seem to remember his mother also had a beauty parlor on Luce St. The seventh Day Adventist Church and school is at Maple Ave and Phoenix Ave; understand a Head Start is there now too. On E Miller Street there was Raymonds Greenhouses and Flower Shop; until they went out of business it was where we ordered flowers and bought corsages. Bedzyks Pentecostal Tabernacle and Christian Academy was a little further down on E Miller St.

Luce Street was a main route to Dunn Field for Elmira Pioneers Baseball Games. There is a nice little neighborhood city park on Gaines Street.

I had an apartment on Robinson St for about 6 months time before being drafted into the Army in 1968.

[ Don Sherman ] down Luce Street to Dunn Field, back in the day you could watch real minor league baseball, with players who were on their way to the major leagues.

[ Kelli Tucker ] Again, another week when I am hopelessly without a clue!

Note: All photo locations will be within Chemung County.
