Hello everyone,
I'm a little disappointed that there is so little activity on this website lately. I am, however, very much impressed with all of the picture postcards and with the POW's each week. They stir so many memories. Recently my sister and I were talking about O'Brien's. What a pleasant surprise to see today's postcard of O'Brien's. Hope everyone is well. Best regards. Irene

Hi friends from Elmira. It was wonderful reading this guestbook. I only saw one name I recognized from the class of '76. I moved from Elmira in '74 to Florida, but attended Hendy, Booth & one year at EFA. I have returned several times to Elmira & am planning a trip to Canandaigua for my Mother, Marj Robinson's 65th high school reunion in September...hopefully it won't be too chilly for me! I look forward to driving around my old stomping grounds. What a great place to grow up. We lived on Evergreen Ave. My Mom worked at Deister & Butler's jewelry store & my Dad, Norm Robinson (deceased in '00) worked for Metropolitan Life Ins. I always remembered the quote "The Finger Lakes region; where God laid his hand". I can't wait to visit Watkins Glen & climb it with my sister, Lori in a month! What great memories...Mom always took us there a few times every summer. We would also go to the Olympic size pool & have picnics. I was even at the concert in Watkins Glen in '73 with the Allman Bros Band, Grateful Dead & who else? I remember my boyfriend & I were told by law enforcement to park our car & walk from Horseheads! Who'd of thought that the concert would end up bigger than Woodstock! What a weekend that was! When I was raising my daughter, I often wished we were in Elmira, but I had a great career with the government & just retired after 31 yrs at the age of 49! I am loving every minute of my retirement. I have traveled all over our America & Elmira will always be one of the prettiest places I've ever been. I don't think I could take the winters there...I'm afraid after 33 yrs in Florida, my blood is too thin. When I left, I was 16, so the snow had always been fun for me...I wasn't the one dealing with the ice on the windshield or waiting 10 minutes for the car to "warm up"! Anyway, I would love to hear from anyone that recognizes my name. Thanks to everyone for sharing stories about your lives in Elmira.

I was born there and lived there for just over 38 years. It was fun when I was young, but as the years went by I watched the powers-that-be slowly destroy it (during my last couple years there the city council passed a "cat leash law"! WTH???). I finally got my family and myself out in May of '07. I've been back twice this year and it seems even worse than when I left! When we moved we moved to Bardstown, KY, (now THAT'S a beautiful city!) I decided then to "adopt" it as my hometown.
I miss my family that is still there and the Southside Sub Shop... That's all...
I left the above comment on the Yahoo Group Elmira and it was refused. We can't all have good feelings about Elmira.
The following is from this very website, the last sentence says it all!
Mr. Romeo operated the popcorn truck at North Main and Church Streets by Wisner Park from 1930 to 1971 and then advertised the truck for sale. Mr. Kenneth White of Bearsville, New York purchased the truck and operated the truck for one year and then took it out of service. Mr. White owned the truck for 15 years. Mr. White sent a letter to the City of Elmira offering to donate the truck to the City, his offer went unabated.

was just in Elmira after 10 years!! it is still the same!! how is the even possible? what is up with all of the drug stores though? jeez...it was fun to see some of the old favorite places STILL around. That just doe not happen. Time stands still there for sure. it was like a dream. I could never live there after seeing what the world has to offer-but-it is still tranquil and was fun to go down memory lane. maybe in another 10 years something good will happen. (doubt it)

Hello everybody,
What's the matter? I haven't seen any correspondence on this site for a couple of weeks. Is the new way to access the website intimidating to everyone? I hope that everyone is well. Best wishes for a Happy Fourth of July. May God bless America and have mercy on us. Hope our service people come home soon. Best regards to all for a good summer.
With fond memories of Elmira, Irene

Found our class reunions in 2000 and 2005 to be so many things all together. Well worth the long trip back. We own a real estate company here( wife is the broker ). I still program in java daily, writing multi-lingual video training materials for industry. No reason to retire when you love what you do. Live on 4 acres with a few dogs and a few dozen cats.
Never lived in Elmira, just went to my senior yr there commuting from Waverly. Maybe some older than I remember my dad "Sam" Myer who was a coach in the Elmira schools in the 40's and 50's.
Very nice site.
Just bought a Prius and love it. Finally we are green.

I do miss the Elmira of the 1980's, including the Iszard's tea room (cream cheese and olive on fresh baked brown bread anyone?), Newberry's $.99 hot fudge sundaes, and Fanny Farmer french mint candy bars. It is always true, "there is no place like home". I go back to Elmira regularly, and find it nothing like it used to be.

I moved to Virginia 21 years ago. I try to come home for a few days every other year. It never ceases to amaze me how much Elmira and Elmira Heights does not change. It is like time stops once you enter the valley. It remains a beautiful area. But, I do not miss the cold and snow! On my last visit was happy to see the carousel at Eldrige Park brought back to life and finally went on glider ride.
Hope the area continues to maintain its' small town atmosphere.

I can hardly believe that next year will be our 50th anniversay of our graduation from E.F.A. Where or where did the time go. I really do enjoy the memories of Old Elmira, the pics the stories etc. Unfortunately I don;t get back to my home town too often now - and when I do I feel sad for all the changes to the town - its not what I remember -- but thanks for the stories and pic

How we all wish to return to that time when we found ourselves beginning the journey. Facing the inevitable, which none of us can escape, we indulge in that nostagia, that sadness for a time when all was bright and all we had was the future. High school dreams. our first infatuation, our memories we cling to in this brief interlude called life. Perhaps the writer Thomas Wolfe summed it up best..."You Can't Go Home Again"...ah, only if we could ! Elmira was a memory, perhaps something to cherish as we see the days rush by.

Hello,
Just a quick note to express how much I am enjoying the photos from the link,"Elmira back when". I especially enjoyed the one of the "M&M" block as you put it. I hadn't seen a picture of the bar and grill since it had been demolished after the flood. Thanks! It brougth back memories of my father being behind the bar serving his customers.
This week's entry featuring Mark Twain was also impressive. Hope everyone has a nice Memorial Day Weekend.

My husband Dave and I left Elmira in 1977. Lived in AZ for 27 years. I retired from Honeywell and Dave from Revlon Inc. Traveled US for a few years and missed the small town atmosphere so bought a house in Hazen ND. We travel south for the winters and visit Elmira on occassion. First stop is always M&M hotdogs, second Pudgies and then Big 9 on Grand Central. Hope they are still there as planning a trip this fall. Lots of potential in Elmira to become a beautiful town once again. Hope to see this happening in the future.

Kudos to the web master. This is a great site which I like to visit often. It is great to see the pictures and search for old friends. I have an interest in organizing a luncheon gathering for Elmirans now living in central Florida from Daytona to Orlando to Tampa Bay. If anyone is interested, please drop me an email.

wow. elmira has really not changed much. it has been like 12 years since I was there. i was in town for a funeral (grandmother). the weather was great. nice to see work was done to eldridge Park. That was such a fun place. Downtown needs something...not sure what-but something to come along and lead the way for others. I am used to outdoor activity so i was a bit bored while there. went to corning-that was better. the lakes are pretty. what is there to do in the winter there? I remember it being dreary. I had forgotten how beautiful some of the homes are there. hope something good happens to that town. Lynne Markey-good to see you!!!

Well I have been in the area for 46 years and yes it has changed very much mainly after the 72 flood. Urban renewll comes along and turns the nice buildings into parking lots that no one will use because there are no buildings to visit. I didn't leave the area because I like the area. I hope I hear from anybody soon.

This is a long shot, but if any of you ever attended either Hardy School or Parley Coburn School, and you had or knew my mom as a teacher, then I'm asking for your help. Maureen Nicolo is retiring this year and on June 14th, I'll be giving her a memory book of several people who have wrote stories about her. If you have a brief story to share, I'll include it. Please send responses to: maureenstories@yahoo.com. Thanks!
