I left Elmira in 1942, and returned only briefly when the Duration of the National Emergency plus 6 months permitted me to be dischrged from the USMCR. Naturally I called my parents and went to spend a few weeks with them at the cottage that was their home across from the road up to the Harris Hill Soaring Center and probably 500 yards from the Chemung river and about 30 or 40 feet of elevation abone the normal river level.
By 1972 they had moved to Holly Hill FL,contiguous with the northern edge of Daytona Beach. Some former neighbors sent them a photo of their little Elmira area house floating off it's foundation and being swept into the raging river. Their good luck to be gone, but terrible for the new owners.
